Numismatic finds of 1995 to 2015 excavations at Elaiussa – Sebaste, a port–city on the South–Eastern Anatolian coast, are discussed. The material ranges from the II cent. B.C. to the middle of the VII cent. A.D., the long period of the site’s life. The frame represented by the numismatic finds is an occasion for dealing with different topics about coin production in Elaiussa’s mint from the I cent. B.C. to the III cent. A.D., the circulation patterns of Roman Provincial Cilician coins, the role of Roman Imperial coinage, the turning point from Late Roman to proto–Byzantine monetary systems and the use of bronze coins, mostly small change, between the V and the VII cent. A.D. To the informations that can be gathered from numismatic finds in the site’s excavations, we can add the ones resulting from the analysis of a hoard, whose study is currently in press, confiscated by Turkish authorities some years ago in Edirne, and most probably coming from the region of Elaiussa – Sebaste.

Abstract
A.D. To the informations that can be gathered from numismatic finds in the site’s excavations, we can add the ones resulting from the analysis of a hoard, whose study is currently in press, confiscated by Turkish authorities some years ago in Edirne, and most probably coming from the region of Elaiussa – Sebaste.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
